Christmas in Mallorca

The first celebration to mark Christmas is the matins service on 24 December, which is held at night in many churches in Mallorca. The most eagerly awaited moment is the singing of the song of Sibil·la – a prophetic song from the Middle Ages which is sung in Catalan by a young boy or girl dressed in a tunic and holding a sword. The most outstanding celebrations are probably those held at the Sanctuary of Lluc, where the choir of Cor dels Blauets perform, and those held at Palma Cathedral.

The day of 25 December is reserved for dinner with the family, as is Boxing Day.

The New year´s celebrations, with all-night festivities, can be included within the celebration of Christmas. And to round off, the final celebration is El Dia dels Reis (Kings´ Day) on 6 January, which is when Mallorcan children receive their presents.
