Magaluf

Magaluf is one of the most important touristic spots in Mallorca. It is on the west coast of the island within the municipal area of Calvià in Palma´s bay, and it is connected to Palma Nova through an appartments and hotels line where, in summertime, thousands of tourists go there to enjoy their holiday by the sea. In Magaluf all activities are devoted to holidays and leisure. There are all kind of facilities, like car, bikes or motorbikes rents, sea trips, water parks, etc. There is also a wide range of restaurants of all kinds, some of them fast-food restaurants and cafeterias which serve simple and economic meals.

Those who wish to enjoy nightlife will find in Magalluf one of the most lively spots in Mallorca, mainly in july and august. There is a great deal of bars and discotheques that open all night long seven days a week, like BCM, that is one of the best and biggest discos in Mallorca.

During daytime the most popular spot is the long and much frequented beach of Magaluf where, apart from sunbathing and swimming, many other water activities can be practiced.

Magaluf residential area has its origins in a farm called Cas Saboners. The first hotel -Atlantic Hotel- was built in 1959. Most hotels and appartments were built during the 60´s. The buildings, too high, had a strong visual impact on the coast. There was a lack of urban planning and the result was called balearització (balearization), term which defines a quick and unruly jumbled urban growth to develop tourist areas. Important improvements in public zones as well as in hotels and other establisments have been carried out to relieve the negative consequences. Other improvement actions are also being applied, like hotels and other obsolete edifications´ demolishements, in order to obtain open public areas.

Magaluf beach is a vast sandy beach which is 850 m long and 35 m wide and which has a sandy seabed. Opposite the beach is Illot de sa Porrassa – a small, narrow island which lies approximately 1,000 m from the shore. This beach is located in the centre of Magaluf, one of the biggest tourist resorts on Mallorca.

Son Maties Beach, also known as Cala Blanca, is a vast sandy spot located in the tourist resort formed by Magaluf and Palma Nova; it is 450 m long and 60 m wide. To get here from Magaluf, you can walk along the beach to the street of Carer Miquel Pinadas, which leads to this beach, which is surrounded by a promenade and hotels and apartments.

Cala Vinyes is a beach which is 35 m long and 90 m wide, where palm trees have been planted on more than half of the beach area. It is within a development with hotels and apartments built very near the beach.
