Porreres

Porreres - Mallorca - Illes Balears

Located in the district of Es Pla, Mallorca´s agriculture centre, the area of Porreres is well known particularly for its exquisite dried apricots. The products of its fertile lands were the driving forces of the local economy for centuries.

The western part of the municipality has a moderately rugged terrain, and Mount En Fernella, 284 metres high, and Mount Monti-Sion, 245 metres high, are its highest points. More than 1000 hectares of municipal land are part of the Massís de Randa nature area of special interest.

Touring the village, which sprung up around the Arab farmstead of Porreres, an air of days gone by can still be perceived. The use of local stone is common in many of the buildings that make up the highly regarded municipal architecture.

The baroque church of Nostra Senyora de la Consolació is surprising for the breadth and wealth of detail that can be found in Roser chapel. A silver processional cross that dates from 1400 and the Gothic pews of the choir are its most highly-prized treasures.

The rectory, the church of Sant Felip Neri, the Town Hall, crosses, windmills and the Oratory of Santa Creu are other elements of interest. Lastly, not to be missed is a visit to the Sanctuary of Monti-Sion, a late fifteenth-century building which was an ancient Latin grammar school and is still the destination of the Via Crucis held each year in Porreres.
