Santa Ponça

Santa Ponça is a tourist resort on the west coast of Mallorca and it falls within the municipal area of Calvià.

It has grown around a bay. The main attractions are a beach and a natural harbour where many pleasure crafts are received. Apart from water sports, Santa Ponça offers visitors the alternative to practice golf.

Those who settle for spending their holidays in Santa Ponça can stay in hotels and appartments -usually first-class- or villas used as summer houses. It is a touristic spot suitable for people of all ages, with a wide variety of shops, bars, restaurants and cafeterias besides other tourist attracions around, like water parks and everything that Mallorca can offer their visitors.

King Jaume I´s troops landed in Santa Ponça´s beach in 1229. They defeated the muslims and Mallorca´s was brought back to the rule of Christian Catalans. This is remembered every year with celebrations lasting more than on week, about september 10. This is the most important festivity in Santa Ponça. A big commemorative cross was settled at the bay´s entry in the 700 anniversary of the event. Pedra Sagrada Chappel is another vestige of the christian conquer. Inside it, there is a big stone on which it is believed that it was celebrated the first mass, after the christian toops landing. It is by the road to Magaluf.

Santa Ponça´s resort started to be built between 1928 and 1930. It was mainly composed by summer residences, with a garden city planning. The process was disrupted by the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent isolation of the country until the 1960´s, when the urban development went on -especially between 1970 and 1980-, though with a different urban planning from the one of a garden city that was formerly projected.

Santa Ponça beach is a vast sandy expanse which is 550 m long and 100 m wide. There are some palm trees surrounding the beach, as well as many pine trees. It is located in the centre of Santa Ponça, by the street of Carrer Puig des Galatzó.

Caló d´en Pellicer is a small beach with fine golden sands. It is 25 m long and 150 m wide. Two thirds of the beach are covered with pine trees and tamarisks. To get here, Avinguda Rei Jaume I goes straight to the beach, which is just after the square of Plaça Santa Ponça in Santa Ponça town.

El Toro beach has fine sand and is 125 m long and 30 m wide. The residential area of El Toro has many bungalows, and the beach is very near the mouth of Port Adriano. To get here from Santa Ponça, follow Avinguda Rei Jaume I, passing the sailing club, until it comes to an end and joins the Via de les Penyes Roges, which leads to Port Adriano and to the beach.
