Son Serra de Marina is a small settlement within the municipal district of Santa Margalida, located between the unspoilt beaches of Sa Canova and Son Real on the Bay of Alcúdia. The first pieces of land were sold in 1954 with certain social and moral conditions attached, such as not allowing men and women to bathe together. The buildings are all houses, most of which are used as second homes during the months of summer by people from inland Mallorca and other parts of Europe. There is a small pleasure port.
The beach of Son Serra de Marina is located within this residential area; it is 400 m long and 100 m wide.
The beach of Son Real is an unspoilt stretch of coast with a pool at the mouth of the torrent of Son Real, with fine white sand stretching along for 500 m, with a width that varies between 20 and 70 metres. This is a beautiful spot which is easy to reach and which never gets crowded. To reach the beach it is necessary to walk for 200 metres along the coast from the pleasure port of Son Serra de Marina.
S´Arenal d´En Cassat is an unspoilt beach which is 1,000 m long and 25 m wide. It has a dune system which is fixed down with vegetation and a pine forest behind it; this forms part of the nature reserve of Son Real and provides a good example of what the coast of Mallorca was like before the construction of the island´s large tourist resorts. To get here you can take the ´Camí des Quilòmetre´ by turning off at kilometre 17 on the road of C-712 (which joins Artà with Can Picafort), along which you have to continue for 2 km in order to reach the sea. It is also possible to reach this spot by walking about 1.5 km along the coast towards the left from the beach of Son Real. Another possibility is to walk from the beach of Son Bauló, from where you need to continue for about 1.5 km along the coast, leaving the resort of Can Picafort behind you. This route has the advantage that it passes by the prehistoric necropolises of Son Real and L´Illot des Porros, which can be viewed shortly before reaching the beach.
